Surroundings

  • Quiet and cosy village, away from mass-tourism
  • Plenty of facilities
  • Ideal for exploring the east coast of Crete

Mirtos is off the beaten track and lies 15 kilometer west of Ierapetra, the long beach looks over the beautiful Libyan Sea.

Popular by the Greeks themselves as a beachside retreat away from the crowds, Mirtos has a sleepy feel for most of the summer, and make an excellent base for exploring the south-east corner of Crete by rental car. The small boulevard offers you a number of fine tavernas. Relaxing into the slow pace of the Cretan village life with a good book, civilised company, is what holidays to Crete are all about.

It’s very nice to take a stroll through the village. The music you hear is Greek or Cretan almost everywhere. You will also discover that Mirtos has a lot to offer, in spite of the fact that it is only a village. To name its most important facilities:

  • a beach with sunbeds
  • a boulevard with plenty of good restaurants, kafenions and cafes
  • in the small streets several restaurants and kafenions
  • two supermarkets, a bakery, two butchers, a pharmacy, a few gift shops, and a fashion shop
  • a tourist agency which rents cars and bikes and provide lots of ideas for trips
  • a scuba diving school
  • an ATM (only during season)

There are many possibilities in the neighbourhood of the village, such as:

  • good, often deserted, beaches near Tertsa
  • dreamy mountain villages inland
  • splendid hiking possibilities along the coast or in the mountains
  • lovely canyons
  • a boat trip to the Crissi islands
  • for people who love shopping Ierapetra offers a very wide range of shops, banks and a big boulevard

And several beautiful car trips of various distances along the east coast, or to the west to, for example:

  • Knossos: Most famous excavation of Crete, close to Heraklion.
  • Phaistos: Famous excavation close to Matala
  • Kato Zakros:  A minoan palace in the extreme east of the island
  • Gournia: Minoan village between Aghios Nicolaos and Pahia Amnos.
